Zack Snyder abuses good music for his porn trailer

February 17, 2011

First, let’s start with this statement: women acting out male fantasies is not about female empowerment. It’s pornography.

Based on the trailer and what you can read on the internet, Zack Snyder’s ‘Sucker Punch’ is live action anime porn that doesn’t even allow its infantized female characters the basic power that comes from the knowledge that you’re voluntarily tantilizing pervy hetero men all over the world. Yes, in my opinion, random trailer-trash, high-school-dropout, webcam models have more power than Zack Snyder’s leading women.

Fine, Zack Snyder’s hacky movies aren’t for me. I prefer my pop culture exploitation to be a little smarter. I won’t pay to see ‘Sucker Punch’.

But that doesn’t mean I can avoid the ridiculous ‘Sucker Punch’ trailer/commercial. The one that includes prominent use of one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands. And despite having seen the Silversun Pickups perform ‘Panic Switch’ live half a dozen times, when I heard the song on the radio this morning, the only thing I could think of was a doe-eyed blond school girl with knee socks and a samurai sword. Because when a girl/woman is oppressed by a horrible life and needs to escape through her imagination, she obviously fantasizes about being a Japanese fetish model with an affinity for the ultra-violence.

‘Panic Switch’ is a great song. Silversun Pickups is a great band. Much greater than anything Zack Snyder could ever hope to become. I truly wish he would stop relying on their genius to buttress his crapfest. If only for the millions of people who need great music to escape their horrible lives. Pretend that oppressed young women are more likely to pick up an iPod than a machine gun.
